Background
Our Distillery is the oldest grain distillery still in operation in France. Since 1812, we produce a protected geographical indication called genever, which is a cereal spirit flavoured with juniper berries, the ancestor of gin. Four years ago, we had the idea with members of the “Conservatoire d’Espaces Naturels des Hauts-de-France” to collaborate. As juniper trees are protected in our area, the idea was to collect fresh juniper berries in a site they manage in Picardy for a new product, the “Long Drink Genever” (a kind of old fashion gin). The result pleased everyone! A well balanced spirit, tasty, sweet, with a great integration of alcohol, that can be tasted on its own and in cocktails. But the best of this great collaboration was not yet written. We presented the “Long Drink Genever” in a tasting competition, the “World Gin Awards” which takes place every year in London, and it was finally elected the 2021’s World’s Best Genever.
